The distinction between the figurative and abstract enables symbols to be used which
refer us back to primitive man’s urge towards self expression as found in cave and
wall paintings. In these contemporary works there is a hint of the myth and language
of these earlier periods. The paintings lead beyond the material towards a more mysterious
and intangible world.
Other important areas of work include still life, flower paintings and responses to music. Composers such as Liszt, Faure and Debussy provide inspiration to explore subjective and emotional possibilities and such music rejects the formal and structural point of view. These musical compositions serve as reflections on a subject rather than the conscious state experienced when listening and performing.
